Fashion Week and Managing Male Heterosexual Super Models

by Larry Chiang on August 20, 2014

Larry Chiang graduated engineering school with a FICO over 800 and so did Duck9 co-founder Matt Smith. Leveraging his augmented and improve credit score, he self-funded. Now, Chiang teaches creative founder financing and street smart legal at Stanford Engineering. His class on ‘technology entrepreneurship’, Engineering 145, is also the focus of his Bloomberg BusinessWeek column “What They Don’t Teach You at Business School”. He preaches street smarts. After Chiang’s Harvard Law keynote, Harvard Business wrote: “What They Don’t Teach You at Stanford Business School“ (it’s the same title as his NY Times bestseller). He will be the first to admit that three mentors helped him. Larry Chiang is Entrepreneur in Residence at Stanford University. If you read his hilariously awesome “What a Supermodel Can Teach a Stanford MBA” and “How to Get Man-Charm”, you will like his latest post. Subject: Fashion Week in NYC, aka Mercedes Benz Fashion Week SS15.

Male models and insight:

/1/ Nails. Have your models send pics.
A lot of models chew their nails. Polish and faux nails work for women. Does it work for male models. 2-3 weeks out…, message their agent.
/2/ Weight.
Losing water weight last minute makes your models look gaunt.
2-3 weeks prior, check in with a smartphone interaction.
(Also, don’t trust social media stalking and eye balling weight)
/3/ Wrangling the models that fly in.
Male models are incredibly flakey. Have them text you before they take off at the airport. Text that they’re on the flight.
I’d wager a wild-butt-guess that half of out of town models show up into NYC late. Double that probability if they’re hetero.
/4/ Comp photogs.
Male models kinda don’t get stopped by paparazzi
It’s demoralizing.
It’s demoralizing as a model when a 5’4″ Asian designer wanna-be gets stopped more than you.
-5- Wrangle from Empire Hotel three hours prior.

The Tents have difficult to find gates. The entrance to back stage are not clearly marked. In February, there is snow
Wrangle from the Empire Hotel lobby. Seriously.
Seriously, get two red balloons made of Kevlar. Models can’t get into most entrances and get Re-routed by security that do not know. [The veteran security work two velvet ropes deep by the skybox by American Express. Newbie security has zero clue. Newbie security works the exterior perimeter door]
